Updates
Xeneric updates itself with Sparkle: it checks every 6 hours and installs when it quits. See the status in Dashboard → About.
How updates work#
Xeneric updates itself with Sparkle. Every 6 hours (and at launch once that's due) it checks xeneric.app for a new version. Updates are signed and notarized, and Xeneric refuses any that aren't.
- With Install updates automatically on (the default), the new version downloads in the background and installs when Xeneric quits. If Xeneric hasn't quit in a while, Sparkle offers Install and Relaunch.
- With it off, a window shows the release notes with Install, Remind me later and Skip.
- Check now (Dashboard → About) or Check for updates… in the runner's menu checks right away.
Updates arrive whatever your account state, so fixes reach you even if your trial has ended.
Update status#
Dashboard → About shows your version and one status line, such as:
- “Xeneric is up to date. Last checked 5 min ago.”
- “Xeneric 0.3.0 is available.” (the runner's menu says “Update to Xeneric 0.3.0…”)
- “Xeneric 0.3.0 is ready. It installs when Xeneric quits.”
- “The last check failed: couldn't reach the update feed.”
What changed in each version is on What's New.
When updates are off#
If About says updates are off, it tells you why:
- “Xeneric isn't in Applications. Move it there to get updates.”
- Move Xeneric.app to /Applications and open it from there.
- “Updates are off in this build”
- A build without the updater or its signing key (for example a development build).
